If you're the person who has to order underhood components, this checklist is for the moment before you approve an invoice. I'm not going to tell you that the lowest price is wrong. I am going to tell you that the lowest price is only one line in a much longer calculation.
I manage purchasing for a 45-person automotive remanufacturing company. My annual parts-purchasing budget is about $240,000, and I have spent the past six years tracking every order in our ERP system. Most of the cost surprises I have caught were not on the purchase order. They were in the part number, the photo, the freight charge, or the core return.

A $115 aftermarket alternator may land at $148 after freight. A remanufactured OEM alternator may be $194 with free shipping and a better warranty. Which one is cheaper? The answer depends on how often the lower-priced part needs a callback.
I don't have hard data on industry-wide first-install failure rates. What I can say anecdotally is that, of the replacement units we tracked last year, the lowest price band produced more no-charge checkups than the mid-price band. The most frustrating part of vendor management is seeing a low-priced part arrive with the wrong connector or no hardware. You'd think an OE part number would prevent that, but it still happens.
Time matters too. If I spend three hours inspecting and returning a bad alternator, the cheap part just lost.
6. Confirm what thermostat means in your order context.
This is the overlooked step in our shop. The word thermostat is too broad.
If you search for a Salus thermostat, you may get a building-controls product, not the engine thermostat that opens at the right coolant temperature. Salus may be a perfectly good brand for its intended category. My point is that part-category clarity affects total cost before you buy.
If an engine thermostat fails closed, the vehicle can overheat. If it fails open, warm-up takes longer and fuel economy drops. The wrong thermostat might cost $30. The tow bill and lost customer time cost much more.

Use this checklist in this order on the first few orders. Once you know a supplier, you can shorten the freight and warranty parts of the math. I still do not shorten the photo check or the portal check. Those are where the unexpected issues show up.

Sometimes it costs more than the premium part plus the labor for installing it twice. The difference is deciding to look at total cost before you sign the PO.
